The gardens itself is a Victorian-style garden. It’s gorgeous year round, but it really comes alive in the spring. The magnolias usually bloom a few weeks before the famous Cherry Blossoms (a different type of flower that bloom every year in DC). Thousands of people visit the city every year to see the flowers! For springtime engagement photos or couple photos, this venue feels like you’re walking into a romantic European garden with its beautiful blooms and fresh aromas.

Laurel and Justin had such a great time on a Sunday morning surrounded by the magnolias. They spent their time enjoying one another’s company as they explored the gardens during their couples session. Laurel wanted to show off a unique sense of style with her outfit, and they had a blast seeing DC in the spring with these magnificent flowers. Instead of only visiting the Smithsonian Castle for their session, they made a whole day trip out of it!

The Smithsonian Castle isn’t just a great location for couples photos. The MoonGate Garden is perfect for unique photos and elopement ceremonies! It has a beautiful pond with pathways around the water to make for great photos with the castle in the background. Doesn’t it look incredible?

Extra Tips and Resources for Planning Your DC Engagement Photos or Elopement

• The Smithsonian Castle is a public space, so there will be people out and about, but as always with DC, weekdays will be a lot better than weekends for minimal crowds. 

• The early morning is typically less crowded than the afternoon. This works great for the gardens as they are open from dawn to dusk!

• In the spring, DC tends to be very crowded. Starting in March when things begin to bloom all the way until the end of Cherry Blossom festival in mid-April. Again, early morning weekdays are your best friends for springtime photos.
