A Sunrise Shenandoah Micro Wedding with a Private Chef Brunch Reception

Most wedding days start in the early afternoon. You get ready, have your ceremony around 4 PM, then there’s the cocktail hour and a dinner reception that stretches into the night. That is just kind of the default, right?

But some of the most peaceful and meaningful wedding experiences I have ever photographed happened before most people have had their first cup of coffee. Jessica and Derek’s Shenandoah micro wedding is one of them. They started their day with private vows on a mountain overlook at sunrise, then headed back to their VRBO farm property for a mid-morning ceremony with family, and they wrapped up the celebration with a brunch reception prepared by a private chef in a gorgeous sunroom.

The whole day was wrapped up before early afternoon, and it all came together beautifully!

Meet Jessica and Derek

Jessica and Derek met in their freshman year of high school. Jessica was already friends with the other girls Derek had dated, and for a long time, they were just friends. It was not until the beginning of senior year that they started spending time together differently. Derek made the first move in May of their senior year, about a month before graduation, and they have been together ever since.

He proposed in the Outer Banks in August 2023. He suggested they go down a couple of days before her family arrived, just the two of them in a hotel. It was the night before her family came, just after sunset, with the most amazing pink clouds rolling in over the water. The next day, they got to surprise her family with the news when they arrived. 

When it came to the wedding, they knew exactly what they did not want. They are both introverts. A big wedding with a room full of people watching them all day was never going to feel right. But they also wanted their families there, and they wanted it to feel like a real celebration. Low-key but meaningful. Intimate but not skipping anything important.

So the structure we came up with made sense for what they had envisioned. Private vows in the park at sunrise just for them, followed by a family ceremony and brunch reception back at the VRBO. 

Private Vows at Sunrise in Shenandoah National Park

Jessica & Derek met me in Shenandoah at sunrise to exchange their private vows in the park. It was a crisp, cool August morning, and the park was completely quiet, because we were there before the rest of the world wakes up. I love mornings in the park because there are no crowds, no noise, and you can just sit, think, and watch the sunrise come over the ridge.

It was a bit windy that day, but it made the morning feel more fun and whimsical. We explored multiple overlooks together, taking photos and just taking it all in. That is one of my favorite things about sunrise elopements in Shenandoah. The go-with-the-flow vibe of moving through the park at that hour, stopping wherever feels right, is unlike any other part of a wedding day.

Jessica and Derek had chosen to share their personal vows privately, just the two of them, before the family ceremony later that morning. This is something a lot of couples don’t know is an option, and honestly, it’s one I love recommending. If the idea of saying your most personal words in front of your family makes you even slightly anxious, this solves that completely. You get to say everything you actually want to say, in private, without an audience. The family ceremony later can just be its own thing.

Why Consider A Sunrise Elopement Ceremony

Jessica and Derek’s morning in the park is a perfect example of why sunrise is an amazing option for your Shenandoah elopement ceremony.

• The popular overlooks on Skyline Drive can get busy, especially on weekends and especially in the fall. At sunrise, they are usually completely empty aside from maybe a few people who want to watch the sunrise. More often than not, though, have the whole mountain to yourselves.
  
• August in the mountains can be warm and humid by the afternoon. Starting at sunrise means you are in the most comfortable part of the day before the heat sets in.
  
• I genuinely cannot overstate how different the light is at sunrise. Warm, golden, directional, with that soft haze sitting in the valleys below. It is some of the most beautiful light I photograph all year.
  
• There is a stillness to the park at that hour that is almost impossible to describe. It creates space for the day to start slowly and intentionally instead of hitting the ground running.
  
• Starting at sunrise means the whole rest of the day is open. You can come back for a family ceremony, have a brunch reception, and still have the entire afternoon ahead of you.

Heading Back to the VRBO

We then headed back to the VRBO to hang out with family, and the couple could also freshen up before the ceremony with everyone. The VRBO was a beautiful working farm property just outside Shenandoah.

Their family ceremony was held mid-morning in the backyard of the property, right beside the pond, with the mountains rising in the distance. It was intimate, relaxed, and absolutely gorgeous. Family gathered on the lawn, the ceremony was kept simple and meaningful, and the whole thing had this elevated-but-casual energy that fit Jessica and Derek so perfectly.

After the ceremony, we did family photos on the property before everyone migrated toward the snacks and yard games while the private chef got to work inside. 

A Brunch Wedding Reception in the Sunroom

The VRBO had a beautiful sunroom with floor-to-ceiling windows on every side, green fields and trees stretching out beyond the glass, and a long wooden table perfectly sized for a micro wedding celebration. Jessica and Derek put out fresh flowers on the table and a few personal photos around the house, but honestly, the space did not need much.

While the private chef cooked, there were drinks, snacks, yard games outside, and kids running around in the grass. 

Side note: We also spent a solid amount of time talking about the new Taylor Swift album that had just dropped. Completely valid wedding day activity. Highly recommend!

Then it was time for their brunch reception. We all enjoyed a delicious meal of burgers, mac and cheese, pasta salad, and fresh fruit. It was a perfect summer wedding lunch! It was warm and joyful and exactly the kind of meal that makes a celebration feel like a real gathering instead of a production.

This is what I want people to know about brunch wedding receptions: it does not feel like a scaled-back version of a real reception! It feels like its own thing entirely. Great food, relaxed atmosphere, actual conversations happening because nobody is exhausted yet, and when it wraps up, you still have the whole day to yourselves.

Visiting the Horses on the Farm

After the brunch reception, we walked down to the barn. The property is a working farm with horses and mules, and one of the people from the farm came out to introduce everyone. They talked about the horses and how they care for them. The kids got to feed them sugar cubes. Everyone, kids and adults, was absolutely delighted!

This is one of my favorite things to talk about with couples during the planning process. Your wedding day can and should include experiences beyond the ceremony itself. 

What do you love to do together? Is there something your guests would genuinely enjoy? Is there something unique about your location that would be a shame to miss? A barn visit, a hike to a viewpoint, an escape room, a cooking class, a brewery stop. These are the details that make your elopement day feel like an experience!

Why a Brunch Wedding Reception Might Be Right for You

Brunch receptions are becoming more and more popular, and this is why you may want to consider this option too:

• The atmosphere is naturally more relaxed, because the celebration feels like a really nice friendly gathering versus a formal reception.
  
• The food is just as amazing as a more traditional celebration. Whether you are hiring a private chef, getting a catered spread, or buying out a restaurant. It doesn’t have to be a plated dinner to feel special!
  
• A brunch reception is also a very unique guest experience, because it is not what people normally expect, and that is exactly why guests would talk about it more!
  
• When the reception is done by noon or early afternoon, your first few hours as a married couple can actually be spent enjoying being married, not recovering from a long night. 
  
• Brunch receptions can be more budget-friendly. A private VRBO with a hired chef is often more affordable than a traditional wedding venue package with food & drink minimums.
