The National Cathedral of Washington, DC, is the world’s 6th-largest cathedral and, with its soaring Gothic architecture and intricate stonework, resembles Notre Dame, the famous cathedral in Paris. This location genuinely looks like it belongs in Europe, not tucked into a residential neighborhood in Northwest DC.
As a DC elopement photographer, it is one of my favorite portrait locations in the entire city. The variety of backdrops on a single property is remarkable. From magical courtyards that look like they could be something out of a fairytale to exquisite gardens with pathways lined with flowers, where you can see the cathedral’s spikes in the background.
Before you fall completely in love with this location (if you have not already), there are some important things to know about what is currently possible here. The rules for eloping at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, have changed recently, and I want to make sure you go in with accurate information so nothing catches you off guard during planning.

Here is the most important update: as of spring 2026, the Washington National Cathedral no longer permits elopement or wedding ceremonies on the grounds. This includes both small, intimate ceremonies and larger gatherings with guests.
The good news is that wedding and engagement portrait sessions are still available. So if you have been dreaming of photos at the Cathedral, that is still very much on the table. You just can’t plan your actual ceremony there right now.
The Cathedral has also moved to an online permit system (launched in September 2025), which actually makes the application process easier and more straightforward than it used to be. I will walk you through exactly what that looks like below.
Important note: Cathedral policies can and do change over time. It is possible that ceremonies may be permitted again in the future. I always recommend checking the Cathedral’s current photo rules page for the latest information, and I stay on top of these updates as part of my support for my couples throughout the planning process.

If you want professional wedding or engagement photos at the Cathedral, a photo location permit is required. Here is what you need to know:
Permits start at $250 per day, with pricing varying based on seasonality, the number of people in your session, and the equipment being used. All permit fees go directly toward supporting the Cathedral’s mission.
You can submit your permit request directly through the Cathedral’s online form. You will need to provide your photographer’s information, your requested date and time, the number of people attending, and the equipment being used. Once approved, you will receive instructions to complete your purchase.
As part of my planning process with you, I help navigate all of this. Permit applications, timing, and logistics are just part of what I take off your plate.
Even without a ceremony on the grounds, the Cathedral can be one of the most stunning stops on your elopement day. The variety of backdrops in one location is genuinely hard to beat.
The Bishop’s Garden feels like a hidden world. Stone pathways wind through carefully tended flower beds, and the Cathedral towers rise above it all. In spring, it is almost impossibly beautiful. The Cathedral exterior itself offers so many different angles. Arched stone doorways that frame you perfectly. The great west facade with its rose window
Couples who love architecture, history, or anything with a European feel tend to absolutely lose their minds over this location in the best way. Two hours gives us enough time to work through several different spots on the grounds. We will plan exactly which areas to prioritize based on your vibe, the light, and what the day calls for.

This is where I come in. The Cathedral is a beautiful stop on your elopement day, but Washington DC is genuinely one of the best cities in the world for elopement ceremonies. Not being able to hold your ceremony at the Cathedral is not a limitation. It is an opportunity to design a day with more than one meaningful location, where each stop serves a different purpose and creates a different feeling.
The ceremony location we choose together will depend on a few things: your vision, your guest count, whether you want to self-officiate or have an officiant, and what kind of energy you want for that moment. Here are some of my favorite spots for your DC elopement ceremony!

Instead of just a short elopement ceremony, I recommend to my couples that they plan a whole day’s adventure in DC for their elopement! And you can too.
The Cathedral is just one stop on your elopement day adventure, and it works best when it is surrounded by other moments that make the day feel completely yours.
Most of my DC couples spend 6 to 8 hours together on their elopement day. That gives us room to start somewhere meaningful, move through a few different locations, pause for a real meal, and end the day feeling like you actually lived it, not raced through it. Here is what a full day built around a Cathedral portrait session could look like:
10:00 AM – Getting ready at your hotel or Airbnb.
11:30 AM – First look and travel to the first location.
12:00 PM – Private vow exchange at one of the amazing DC elopement ceremony locations, like the DC War Memorial.
12:30 PM – Portraits at the ceremony spot
2:00 PM – Mid-day break or shared picnic
3:30 PM – Exploring the National Cathedral for your elopement portraits
5:30 PM – A dinner reservation at somewhere special, cocktails at a rooftop bar, or a celebration dinner with your closest people. This is where the day gets to feel like a party.
That is a real, full, memorable wedding day, not a rushed afternoon. And honestly, the Cathedral portrait session often becomes one of my couples’ favorite parts of the day. Once the ceremony is done and the nerves have settled, there is something so relaxed and joyful about wandering a beautiful space together with nowhere to be and nothing to do except enjoy being married.

If you are reading this: book her now! Booking Juliana to help plan and photograph our elopement in D.C. was the best decision we made. From the very first email she was incredibly helpful and worked with us to plan the perfect day for my fiancé and I. From emails to zoom calls she helped us create the ideal timeline for us.
I told her I did not want to be anxious the day of or worry about planning and she took care of just about everything. She even drove around D.C. two days before our elopement to make sure some cherry blossoms were still in bloom. The day of I did not have to worry about anything. She had the timeline planned out with specific locations and knew exactly what we wanted.
I am not a fan of being in front of the camera, but Juliana made me feel comfortable and like we were life-long friends.
I have only seen the sneak peeks, but the photos capture the relationship between my now husband and I perfectly. Saying I am obsessed with the photos is an understatement.
I seriously cannot recommend Juliana enough. She is the kindest soul, while also being incredibly talented behind the camera. You will not regret booking with her! – Jessica
