You’re engaged! Yay!! It’s a super exciting time & I’m so happy for you!! I know having professional photos taken can be daunting so here are 5 quick tips on how to prepare for your engagement session.

1) Choose a meaningful location

Whether it’s where you first met, your first date, or a new place you want to explore together, choose a location that holds meaning to your relationship. The location is part of your love story that is told in your photos, almost like a character itself. Let the location enhance the emotions of the session.

2) Wear outfits you feel confident in

In my opinion, I will always suggest to wear outfits you already have and love. You 100% can buy a new dress or shirt for your engagement session, but just make sure to wear it beforehand to ensure that you can a) move around in it because you’ll most likely be walking around, dancing and other activities. And b) make sure you feel GOOD in it and maybe even a little sexy. Like you’re going on date night and you KNOW you look good 😉 The last thing I want is for you to feel uncomfortable in your clothes.

3) Try to stick to neutral colors for outfits and simple patterns.

You don’t want to distract away from the emotions and the story of your session. You can have statement pieces, but keep it just to one or matching themes ( band t-shirts, for example) If one person wears a pattern, the other wears solid to complement.

My approach to engagement or couples session is to focus on YOU and your emotions. You are the main character to the story we’re trying to tell. The location and your clothes are merely supporting characters that help give context but they should never take attention away from you and your emotions.

Bright colors, busy patterns as well as busy locations can make photos feel overwhelming and you both can get lost in the photos.

4) Use props!!!

Food, drinks, and activities enhance the session and make things more dynamic! And they might even help you relax and have more fun. Think about things that hold meaning in your relationship and what kinds of activities do you like to do together?

I get it, it can be super intimidating to be in front of a camera. That’s why I always suggest meaningful activities to help you relax and be present in the moment with your partner so much so that you might even forget the camera is there at all at times. Even starting the session off with getting coffee and snuggling together outside the cafe on a bench is a great way to get used to the camera.

Or bringing important items such a guitars, books, champagne, pets, a picnic blanket with favorite snacks and drinks, and the list goes on!

Pro tip: For newlyweds, if you’re doing a 1-year anniversary session, you can celebrate by eating the top layer of your wedding cake if you froze it like in the photos below!

5) Have fun and be yourself!!!

This session is all about you and your partner having fun together. Think about it like a date and just be in the moment together. My style of photographing couples uses prompts and activities so that your focus is on each other and capturing the natural chemistry between you. Don’t overthink it 🤗
